Synesthesia

A collaboration with a choreographer from London Studio Centre.

Synesthesia: the perceptual phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.

A dance piece based on the experience of the condition by an 18 year old synesthete named Rachel, three emotions associated with three colours. Deep feeling or sadness : Blue, Anger and irritation: Red, Discomfort, unease: Yellow. As Rachel described, when submerged by one of the feeling, sudden shapes appears in the corresponding colours, in a “worm-wiggly” yellow form, in a liquid drowning blue or as a red angular shape. During the show, when the sentiment was triggered, a performer would cross each door/frame and become the colour and shape…
